Two reasons why car owners should invest in winter tyres for the colder seasons

About Me
Tyres and Wheels

Hello, my name is Tony. This is my latest blog about tyres and wheels. I live about an auto repair shop which means I have learnt a thing or two about the best kind of wheels and tyres for any car. Because I don't have a job at the moment, I will often spend time down there helping the guys out with whatever repairs they are doing. I have become a sort of amateur expert in quickly changing a tyre and have even helped out some of my friends. I decided to start this blog to pass on everything I know about wheels and tyres.

Two reasons why car owners should invest in winter tyres for the colder seasons

Here are two reasons why any car owner who drives in icy, cold conditions during the chillier seasons should invest in winter tyres.

These tyres can increase traction levels and improve car handling

One reason car owners should get winter tyres for their vehicles is that these tyres provide better traction when a person is driving on an icy or wet road and can improve a car's handling in these conditions. This is due to the way these tyres are designed. For example, the tread patterns of winter tyres typically have deeper grooves and higher numbers of sipes than all-season tyres. These features can help the tyres to disperse and keep slush or snow away from the tyre's contact patch and also help them to maintain a good grip on the road surface. This can then reduce the risk of aquaplaning or of the driver skidding across an icy road.

Additionally, winter tyres are usually made of a special rubber that is designed to stay pliable and relatively soft, even when exposed to cold temperatures. This quality helps the tyres to stay in contact with even very slippery, icy or wet surfaces. This, in turn, can help a driver to maintain relatively short braking distances even when driving on snowy roads (which can help them to avoid causing accidents).

They can save a car owner money in the long run

Whilst some budget-conscious car owners may be reluctant to buy winter tyres due to their cost, the purchasing of these tyres could save a car owner money in the long run. The reason for this is that if a person uses their all-season or summer tyres to drive in cold, wet and icy conditions for several months of the year, this could greatly reduce the lifespan of these tyres. For example, if as a result of using these seasonally-inappropriate tyres during the winter months, a driver has to greatly increase their braking distances and finds their car skidding across the roads quite often, the treads on these tyres could deteriorate faster than they're supposed to and the car owner might then have to replace the tyres years before they should have needed to. If car owners buy winter tyres, they could potentially keep their other tyres in excellent condition for many years.

Additionally, if a person drives around with all-season or summer tyres on their vehicle during the winter, they could increase their risk of getting into an accident (such as skidding towards and colliding with a tree). This could result in them incurring the expense of either having repairs done to their vehicle or buying another vehicle. By investing in winter tyres, they could reduce their chances of having to pay for major repairs or a new car.
